The Halls Have Been Decked...

Warmest Winter Greetings, my dear friends!  It seems a lot like winter around here, the sights, the scents...  Why, as I type this, I see a pile of laundry waiting to be washed because of the yucky germs on it and I smell the refreshingly winter scents of Lysol and bleach because if it was still for greater than five seconds, I've Lysol-ed it and bleached it in the last day or two.  Ah, yes friends, the flu season is upon us.  The Little Boy AND The Deuce have been hit hard with a bad stomach virus.  And I am clinging to my bottle of hand sanitizer and have been tempted to don a mask and gloves around the Ranch here!

And, it's weird.  It's the first week of December.  December, people.  You know, the month of Christmas...as in WHITE Christmas...as in S*N*O*W and it's like 70 degrees outside.  I don't like this.  I want frigid temps!  Snow!  Snow!  SNOW!  I took TLB to the doctor yesterday (he's so sick-boo!) and I bundled the child up!  As I was on my way in town, I looked at my thermometer in the van and it said 69 degrees!  So I had to strip the layers of me and TLB before we headed in to the doc's office!  Wild.  I live in the midwest, not the south.  We should have had at least one good snow by now.  Sheesh.

Anyhoo...it's the most wonderful time of the year, as they say!  And all the blogs I stalk are posting photos of their Christmas decorations.  So naturally, I said to myself, 'why Sister Sass, you have some pretty cute stuffs up, why don't you post some photos?'  And I then replied, 'you know, Sister Sass, you're right!  I'm gonna post some photos!  You're so smart!'  I chuckled, 'Oh Sass, stop it.  Have I told you lately you're so funny and cute?'  Okay, this could go on and on...

First stop, the mantel.  Now in the blog world, the mantle is like, the creme de la creme of home decorating.  Only the finest decor goes there and people have contests to see who has the best mantel.  I have to laugh.  Not sure why, but it's funny.  Here's my take on decorating...I do what I like and I hope my family and guests to my home think it's pleasant to look at.  Some places in my home, I clear out the 'everyday' decor and cover it in Christmas.  Other places, I tuck a little Christmas in here and there.  My mantle this year was one of the latter (or is it ladder, I never know).

An evergreen and berry with jingle bells pick tucked into a candle arrangement.  Wonderful scented evergreen candle aglow next to my favorite family photo.

Simple mantel, but that's what I like!  Well, not usually, but in this case, simple made me happy.

Another little spot in my house that I like is our Victrola.  I LOVE the Vic!  It was The Deuce's grandparent's Victrola.  There's a long story with it, I won't bore ya, but it's one of my FAVE furniture pieces we have.  So, I always have my wedding bouquet tucked atop the Vic, cuz you know, they're all sentimental and all, and I like to keep them there.  Another thing very dear to me is my Papa's Bible.  It's not 'The One' like if you're a member of my family reading this, you know what I'm talking about.  It's another Bible of his that, nonetheless, is very dear to me because I love my Papa and miss him terribly (see a million other previous posts on Papa, I'll cry if I say too much more).  And I have a nativity scene that a sweet neighbor of mine growing up gave to me.  So, I kind of did a little arrangement with these things.  Again, simple, but I likes it.

And if you can see (and I am sobbing now), it's opened to the book of Luke.  The Christmas Story is highlighted.  Papa did that for me when one year, he had me read The Christmas Story at our church's Christmas service.  There are all kinds of scriptures highlighted in this Bible, but this particular one is very special.  I can't say anymore because I'll blubber like a stinkin' walrus!  ;-)

Now, I have Christmas everywhere in this house, and I'm not going to post a million pictures of snowmen on side tables, or super cute ribbon I've weaved in and out of this or that, but here's just a few more photos...

Of course, you recognize Helen the Hoosier Cabinet in this photo!!!  Another beloved piece of furniture.  This was my Granny and Grandpa's.  LOVE LOVE LOVE this thing!!!  It was fun to decorate the top of this because my kitchen is reds, whites, and greens, but I don't think it looks Christmas-ey all year.  So it was fun to get Christmas stuffs and gather them up here!  My faves would be the 'winter warmer' sign that The Deuce's parents got me.  It's advertising warm Dr. Pepper.  Never had warm Dr. Pepper, but apparently, it was something they tried to market.  Hmm.  And, I'm all about initials these days.  Like my 'A' candle up there.

The Little Boy watching Elf by the Itty Bitty Tree in our family room.

The tree in our family room was formerly the tree I'd put in TLB's room.  Now that he's a little bigger, the tree wouldn't work in his room.  He is grabby, shall we say.  If this was in his room this year, he'd have every ornament off and the bubble lights would bubble no more!  hahaha!  So, I decided to put it in the fam room.  And in the photo he's watching Elf with Will Ferrell.  Hilarious movie!  One of my faves, and TLB is certainly my son because it's one of his faves, too.  Even in July!

Horrible tree.  Crooked tree.  Makes me want to cry tree.

My little Elf decorating!

It looks better in the dark!

Soooo, we cut our own tree and the tree itself is proof alone that The Deuce and I should not be allowed to pick out things like a tree, The Christmas Tree, by ourselves.  It's crooked, half dead and half still in the field at the Tree Farm!  When we got it home and cut the bailing twine off, we looked at each other and laughed!  Oh we cracked up!  It was, I swear, straight out of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation!  We turned the tree around and around and no matter how we positioned it, it was bad.  But, ya know, it was a memory.  From the hunt for the 'perfect' *cough, cough* tree to the ride home (The Deuce loaded it into the back of the Town & Country!  See, Stow 'n' Go is handy!!!), to that moment we realized we chose a 'special' tree, it was all a memory that will last forever.  I wouldn't trade that for ANYTHING!

Spending this holiday season with my two favorite people, adding in memories from Christmases past, making new traditions as a family (Advent calendars, people!  THE BEST family time and so meaningful.) is what it's all about.  Well, not really what IT's all about, but you get what I'm saying here, right?  Enjoy those you're spending your life with!  Sit back for a while and think of those not so perfect things (crooked tree) and how those could really be a blessing.  My crooked tree is a blessing because it's one I chose with my boys.  I am blessed to have a loving husband and a sweet little boy.  Life is good.

Be thinking of what it's all about for you.  I'll talk about the real 'IT' in a later post, but for now, think about why you're doing what you're doing this holiday season and who you're doing it for.  I can't wait to hear what you have to say!!!

In the mean time, I'll be cozied up here in my T-Shirt and shorts waiting on the colder weather this month is supposed to bring!

Love ya!
